Discussion Question #3- Week 11

3) Pick one concept from the assigned reading this week, not already discussed, that you found useful or interesting and discuss it.

Appeal to vanity which is also known as apple polishing is a very interesting concept to me. From my understanding the idea of the appeal to vanity is to create a predisposition towards an agreement by using compliments. The most important part of this concept is the fact that the combination of the target and the compliment must be somehow related to the issue at hand.
For example:
"Oops, Officer i know i ran a red light, but wow your looking mighty handsome tonight."
As you can see this example shows that this is an attempt to try and convince the officer not to give her a ticket for running a red light with a compliment to the officer.
In this section, appeal to vanity ties into the topic of appeal to emotion because in an argument with a prescriptive conclusion it can either be good or bad. It is easier to analyze an argument by being alert of the emotion in the premises.

  1. Hello mmorgan!
Great post, I enjoyed reading it. I posted the same topic on my third discussion question for the week. I think apple polishing is funny but it's a great way to convince someone when you want something. Your example is great! Isn't it great to be a girl sometimes haha :) I work at a restaurant part time as a shift manager and I encounter apple polishing from my coworkers practically every time I work so they could get my approval for whatever they want, and I'm not going to lie, it works!! Great job on your post, have a good rest of your weekend. Enjoy the extra hour we get for daylight savings! :)

  2. Thank you for your comment on my post on apple polishing! I enjoyed reading your post on apple polishing as well because you explained it in a different way from mine. Your example is funny because I see it occur all the time in movies, on shows, and even in person. Women often try to seduce and persuade men into getting things their way. I admit that I have tried to use the appeal of vanity (apple polishing) in a situation similar to your example. Sometime it works and sometime it doesn't, but it doesn't hurt to try because some people fall for the appeal of vanity :)
