Discussion Question #2- Week 11

2) Pertaining to page 195, complete objective 1, 2, 3, 6 OR 7.

1. Write a bad argument in favor of affirmative action whose only premises appeal to pity.

Two of my friends got into an argument; this is what was said in their argument:

Friend 1: "What's wrong?"
Friend 2 : "I always feel like you never care about how I feel, especially when we argue!"
Friend 1: "If i didn't care about how you feel, i wouldn't ask you what is wrong."
Friend 2: "Because you just want to feel sorry for me, and your only asking what is wrong because you feel bad."
Friend 1: " Why would i pity you, especially being one of my good friends. I always tell you how i feel and i would expect the same from you."

As you can see in this situation, Friend 2 has a bad argument because they are arguing based on their emotion rather than logic or reasoning; the premises is unstated and it appeals to pity.

  1. Hello. =)
This is a good example. I like it. The friend says that they always argue and he or she doesn’t know if he or she cares. If a friend asks what’s wrong, they know you so well that they know something is bothering you. So that is why they ask. They ask because they are worry about you. Friend 2 doesn’t feel that way. Friend 1 was being a good friend and Friend 2 just thought that he or she wants the other one to be miserable or something. I hope that’s what you’re trying to say. Keep up the good work. =]
